Dr. Roy S Shelburne

Clinical Records Prevent Criminal Records

Course Summary:

Dr. Shelburne went to prison on August 20, 2008 and was released on May 14, 2010 and learned a series of lessons the hard way. There are ways to protect and defend a dental practice and to prevent what happened to him from happening to you.
Know that if it’s not in your clinical record, you didn’t see it, you didn’t say it, you didn’t do it, it didn’t need to be done, and it doesn’t exist….from the legal perspective. To be prepared for any challenge the whole dental team must be careful, concise, complete, and diligent, not just the doctor because, the whole team is potentially at risk. Learning and implementing this no non-sense team approach to record keeping could mean the difference between success and failure in the event of an action or challenge to your practice and will result in maximum legitimate reimbursement.

Objectives:

1. To have fun while learning
2. To understand that what you don’t know can hurt you and that ignorance is no excuse
3. To learn to assimilate and maintain records that can both protect and defend.
4. Understand the necessity of due diligence and how to conduct records review and internal audits to insure accuracy and excellence

Speaker Bio:

Ahoy mateys! Roy S Shelburne, DDS is an avid traveler (to five continents and cruiser on 8 cruise lines with over 600 cruise nights, an American Dental Association Subject Matter Expert (on documentation, billing, coding and financial matters) dentist, husband, father, business owner, speaker, writer, consultant and…felon, convicted of healthcare fraud, racketeering, money laundering, and structuring then spending 19 months in federal prison and 3 months in a halfway house. Dr Roy Shelburne has spoken at the American Dental Association’s National Meeting, the Greater New York Dental Meeting, the Yankee Dental Congress, the Hinman Dental Meeting to name a few and shares his story, his mistakes, and what was learned so that you might implement systems to maximize legitimate reimbursement, reduce stress, laugh more and stay out of prison…. (He can also be counted on in most locations as an experienced travel guide.)

Ahoy all Smiles at Sea travelers!

Please read the following update pertaining to the October 2019 Smiles at Sea event.

As you probably have already heard, due to changes in US policy regarding travel to Cuba, all cruises to Cuba have been cancelled effective June 5th 2019. Fortunately, Royal Caribbean has already rerouted the itinerary to include Nassau, Bahamas instead of Havana, Cuba. In addition, the cruise line has decided to discount the cruise fare by 50%!! (excluding government taxes).

This is great news since the Smiles at Sea event will remain unchanged and all CE classes and activities will be held as scheduled!

If you have paid for your cruise in full, you will receive a refund to your original form of payment of the discounted amount.

If you have not yet paid for your cruise in full, your monthly payment schedule with Smiles at Sea will be adjusted accordingly to reflect the discounted amount.

You will soon receive a communication from Royal Caribbean outlining the itinerary change and the discount described above. You may also cancel your reservation for a full refund.

All cancellation requests must be received by Smiles at Sea no later than June 15, 2019.
